Why Tallow soap?
Animal fat in a soap just sounds odd to the modern ear. Fatty oil doesn’t sound like it belongs in a cleaning product. But did you know that most dish soaps on the shelves contain vegetable oil? Why is that?
Fats in soap, which are not water soluble, bind to the other fats sitting on surfaces, dishes, or clothes. Then, the soap works to emulsify those fats into water so that grease and grime can be lifted out and washed away. This works just like oil cleansing works on our skin’s sebum!
This method goes all the way back to ancient times. As early as the Bronze Age, a substance made from animal fat (tallow) was being used to make soap and candles. In Ancient Greece and Rome, tallow was used to clean grease from wool and cloth. this practice continued for millennia, and tallow was highly prized for its healing, moisturizing, and cleansing properties.
Over the centuries, we found cheaper and cheaper ways to manufacture vegetable oils, and animal fats were pushed out of style. Then, due to animal fat and vegetable oil shortages during the World Wars, chemists began synthesizing substances with similar properties. But in our book, the nourishing, vitamin rich properties of tallow beat synthetic alternatives any day! Your dishes and your hands will thank you!
